summer rain

dark wet spots speckle the pavement
drying up before the ground is wet
a precursor

grey clouds roll overhead
quickening their pace
birds fly in every direction but straight
the wind whips up just as thunder rumbles through the earth
electricity flickers in time with lightning
and the sky cracks in two
like a ripe coconut
releasing a dam’s worth of water
sounds like a barrage of ice chips against the tin roof
a storm whose bark is worse than its bite
grey has transformed into a solid white blanket
dirt pools into potholes of mud
flowers drown in their beds
cold air cuts through the humidity
it only takes a moment for everything to change

i watch for awhile
sprays of rain cooling my skin
